E Pauahi, ‘A‘ole Paulele! The Fire is Done, The Journey Continues During the summer months (June thru August) there were a host of events and activities that was coordinated by the Church Centennial Committee and membership of Kaumakapili. We are especially appreciative to the many who volunteered to participate in the various functions through monetary, in-kind and service contributions. Listed below are just a few of the events we completed during the summer: Aha Iki at Kaumakapili 100 years ago, June 1911, our sanctuary was dedicated with the delegates of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association (predecessor of the Hawaii Conference United Church of Christ). In commemoration of that significant event, Kaumakapili extended an invitation to host annual meeting of the Association of Hawaiian Evangelical Churches (AHEC); State Council of Hawaiian Congregational Churches, State Sunday School Association, and Christian Endeavor Hawaii on June 8-9th. Delegates came from around the state and held worship services, business meetings and workshops on our campus. The theme for the two day conference was "Hulihia" with a Kumuhana scripture text from 2 Timothy 3:16-17: (16) O ka palapala hemolele a pau, na haawiia mai ia e ka Uhane o ke Akua, he mea ia e pono ai,no ke ao ana, no ka papa ana, no ka hoopololei ana, no ka hoonaauao ana ma ka pono; (17) I hemolele ai ke kanaka o ke Akua, i makaukau lea ai hoi I na hana maikai a pau.
Kaumakapili continues to be actively involved in the life of our statewide and national conference with our Kahu and other faithful members serving integral leadership roles. Mahalo to all the volunteers who helped with cooking, cleaning and hosting our guests. A special mahalo to Ryan and Pōhai Wong for helping keep our delegates well fed and energized during the course of the meetings. Also, Mahalo to Buddy Maunakea, David Kaneao and Henry Maunakea for organizing and coordinating this event with our partnering facility users and the Hawaii Conference. Centennial Celebration Event in Waikiki June 25, 1911 was the date Rev. William Nehemiah Lono and our Kaumakapili ohana dedicated the current hale pule. In commemoration of this significant event, Church Centennial Committee organized a celebratory event at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. " A God, A Place, A People, A Legacy" was the theme for our Centennial Event. A story slide presentation was well executed by our presenters Trevor Maunakea and Kaleinani Schoenstein. Pre-dinner music was provided by Kumu Kimo Keaulana and his talented musicians in the foyer of the Ballroom. Dinner music and entertainment was provided by Weldon Kekauoha and men, dancers from Hālau Pu‘uanahulu. Those who attended were members, friends, representatives of businesses, Trusts and Foundations, community health and service agencies, churches, and volunteers. Our mahalo to Henry Maunakea and the Centennial Celebration Committee for organizing opportunities to celebrate and fellowship, to the volunteers who faithfully gave of their talents to assist with the implementation, to Momi Maunakea , Kahau Schoenstein and Ryan Wong for coordinating the program for the evening. Na Kahu O Keoneula On Sunday June 26, 2011, we honored those who served and continue to serve as Na Kahu O Keoneula. From Kahu William Nehemiah Lono to our present Kahu Richard Kamanu, there have been a host of ministers that have served us well in the last 111 years. Centennial Community Luncheon ~ Kaumakapili Style The Outreach Committee sponsored a Centennial Community Luncheon on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Hale Kamika. Dr. Anne Leake, chairperson of the Outreach Committee, spearheaded the event with the help of committee members, volunteers, members and friends of Kaumakapili and the Kalihi Palama Health Clinic. The menu for the event was designed by Andrea Macabeo, Kalihi Palama Health Clinic Hodge Podge program. The "healthy" menu consisted of shrimp and veggies on a skewer, watercress salad, ulu chowder, barbeque asian citrus chicken and fruit gelato for dessert. Invitation was extended to various community organizations and social service agencies. Those who attened were representative from St. Elizabeth's Episcopal Church, Kaiulani Elementary School, Keiki O Ka Aina, Women's Correctional Center, physicians and dental staff of Kalihi Palama Health Clinic; and patrons of our Food Bank, Homeless and Free Store. Everyone enjoyed the audio visual overview of 100 years in the life and history of Kaumakapili and surround businesses. The guest left with a bag of healthy goodies in a tote bag.
